Sunday Sulks

Yes, I know I should be grateful that Äiti is back and should not be sulking, but  methinks you would be too, Loyal Readers, if you know about what she failed to do while away. She headed off to Tromso in Norway (N), and passed loads and loads of rocks. Did she bring back a friend for our Rock of Norway ? Nope.  Surely she could have managed just a couple of cubic metres for us?
And what about a duck or two ? The eiders were nesting in the fjords - surely they would share their warm feathers with us ?
And this is one of Äiti's favourite birds - an oystercatcher (complete with built in toothpick). Did we get to hear its shrill call ? Nope. Pöh.
At silly o'clock on the last day, Äiti was out on the icy lake watching wildlife: at 4.30am she stumbled across her students going to bed, just as she was dressing up to see the wildlife!).  This is a Norwegian peak seen from a Finnish place called Kilpisjärvi which is most stunning and beautiful and cold.
What was she watching ? Lemmings!  These, Loyal Readers, were migrating (and no, they don't do that in huge crowds jumping off cliffs suicidally). Äiti managed to get one photo - she didn't have her good camera with her so I apologise for the incompetent focusing.
But she did get a video to prove to us that they were too fast to catch.  These little fellows dash across the icy lake to find a breeding spot. They look like excellent fun to me and I am very disappointed that all we got from the holiday was a lousy cat bed. Pöh.
Now Äiti did see a few lemmings that had failed to cross roads. One had a most curious cut across it's belly, done with surgical precision and this prompted a lot of thinking about how and why it died. Apparently the Crows of Lapland simply slice open the lemming belly and take out the liver and lungs, leaving the rest. Much respect to them - they are clearly very refined in their tastes.

Your mum had an adventure and my mum had never seen a lemming before. So something new for her.

The rock might have been interesting to sit on, but the lemming would have been more fun. And thank you for the nice card!

Looks like a pawsome trip for your mom. I've never seen a lemming before. I think Aiti should have brought a lemming home for kitties to chase around the house ;-)

The lemmings look much more fun than a rock, and easier for Aiti to carry home too.
