Bewitched Monday

On Palm Sunday, we have a tradition in Finland, that the children of the neighbourhood dress as witches and come to the houses with budding willow branches, decorated with feathers and strings. They say a little rhyme, and get sweets (usually Easter eggs) in return.  Now Äiti is normally a miserable old witch herself and does not answer the door, until she realised: sticks, feathers, strings  = cat toys!
As soon as they were on the table we were on them!
I am not going to let the burmese have all the fun!
Mesi becomes very possessive.
But Seppo also made his claim on the feathers.
Here's the little rhyme that the witches recite:

Virvon, varvon, tuoreeks terveeks, tulevaks vuodeks; vitsa sulle, palkka mulle!
I wave a twig, for a fresh and healthy year ahead; a twig for you, a reward for me!

In my opinion, it's much more fun that if they visited at Halloween for trick or treat.

Mommy says those twigs better not be in the sauna when she visits...no beatings for her!

What an awesome (for kitties!) holiday tradition! I'm glad Äiti figured it out and took advantage this year.

That is sooooooo weird, King P! We is trying to figure out the Witch-Jesus-Crucifixion-willow branch connections but our brains a-sploded.

Hah! I also got branches yesterday. I was thinking about my cats and what they were missing. (On the other hand, this year I still have a nice decoration!) I thought about writing a post on why Finnish cats love Eastern. I wanted to ask you if your cats like the branches, but now I already know the answer. :)

Decorated pussy willows! Could anything be more perfect!? That silly rabbit and bunches of chocolate, which of course we can't eat, is all we've got! The children have done a nice job with their decorations too! Lucky kitties. Good thinking Aiti.
