What is a luxating patella ? Äiti has taken over as a few people have asked what is actually wrong with Punapippuri.

A luxated patella is a slipped kneecap, which for Punapippuri now will not slip back into place. The patella, or kneecap, fits into a little dimple/groove/dip in the main bone and from it the other muscles can move. If you think about a marble inside a bowl; this is a bit exaggerated, but the image works. In domestic cats, the dip is like a bowl, so if the marble rolls a bit, it falls naturally back in place. In some breed cats the dip is flattened out, and it's more like a marble resting on a flat surface so if it rolls, it's harder to fall back and needs an operation to correct it (this is also very common in some dog breeds).
However Punapippuri's bone is the right shape (despite all his grand claims, he's a domestic cat and does not have congenital 'defects'), but his patella will not slip back because the joint is now so swollen, the patella is all over the place. The original injury - we think - was from a big jump down in which he twisted his leg. I noticed him limping a bit, but it got better so ignored it (more fool me). A few days later he was limping permanently and then he went to the vet, and it got better. In fact it magically got 100% better all the time he was at the vet's, and his X-ray was very good. Then, however, the limp became much worse again and after about 5 days did affect his toilet habits- poor little guy was really twisting at an angle to try to get rid of his poo. He has been on metacam, every day, and I have been trying to get him to rest. He now has little steps or ramps up to his favourite places so he can get to them, and is being fed lots of treats (high protein - he'll need it for healing after his op).
There's more on luxating patellas on wiki, and I came across this blog: Maggie May has had many problems and what her human has written has been really helpful to me.

Wow - thank you all for extending paws of friendship across the Atlantic to me! I have spent the day sleeping and didn't really want my tea tonight. I think Äiti might have some kinkku (ham) in the fridge for me instead of Latz/felix wet food. I hope I do get some because tomorrow I have to be starved and kept away from food. This I do not like. Please send my best greetings to Maggie May - she looks a real little cutie..... I quite like tortie girls.......
